“Zac, you awake?” Tay’s voice floated
through my mind. He sounded so far away,
but I knew he was standing beside me.
I could feel his trembling hand on my
“I was starting to get worried.” Natalie’s
voice came in clearer. I felt real dizzy.
I opened my eyes and saw I was no
longer in the bathroom, but now on a
laid back airplane chair with a cold
rag resting on my beating forehead.
Everyone surrounded me.
“How long have I been asleep?” I
couldn’t quite remember what had
happened. First I was talking to Kate,
and then…oh, no. It hadn’t been a
dream. Kate had told me she was
pregnant, and I had passed out right
there. There she had been, crying her
eyes out, and the best I could do was
faint on her. Just what she needed at
a time like that.
“Awhile, man, almost two hours.” Ike
looked sicker than ever. What was
wrong with him? It was eating me alive.
I looked around, but Kate was nowhere
to be seen.
“Where’s Kate? Where is she?” Suddenly
my heart seemed to be beating itself
out of my chest.
“Calm down, man, she’s in the bathroom.”
Taylor was looking at me this weird way.
Why was everyone doing that to me today?
A better question might be why I was acting
so strange all day. Amidst all my thinking I
almost didn’t realize when Kate came moping
out of the bathroom. She just ran to me and
I hugged her as tight as I could. Man, I was
in deep now. Questions raced through my
mind with no answers to be found. I grabbed
Ike by the shirt collar.
“I need to talk to you,” I mumbled as I
dragged him into the bathroom.
“Watch it! What is with you today? What’s
going on?” Ike seemed like the only
person I could trust right now. I took a
“Ike, Kate’s…pregnant.” I breathed.
He seemed to be in the same state of
shock that I had been. I slid down on
the floor like a slinky. The tears rushed
back to my eyes.
“Zac, I…I don’t know what to say…is
that why you…?”
“Yeah,” I finished for him. I couldn’t
stand to hear anyone say it. How did this
happen? Everything was going so fast.
Once again, Ike seemed to read my mind.
He does that a lot.
“Don’t beat yourself up, man. It happens…
we’ll, we’ll work this out…” he tried to finish,
but I could see he was starting to cry, too,
no matter how much he tried to hide it from
“You don’t understand!” I gasped.
“I was planning on breaking it off and,
well; now, I’m just, I’m stuck! I can’t do
that now! What kind of person would I be
if I did that? I mean, what am I going to do
now? Can you tell me that, Ike? Cause
you always seem to have the answers
to everything, so how about you give
it a shot on this one huh?” My voice had
gone from a whisper to a whiney kind
of yell. But I couldn’t help it…I thought
I was going to go insane. I was startled
when someone knocked on the door.
“You guys in there?” Oh no. It was Kate.
Had she heard what I said?
“Uh, yeah, Kate, we’ll be right there…”
Ike just looked at me. “It’s gonna be ok man,
it’s gonna be ok.” And with that he clicked
open the door and walked out. Just like
that. I furiously started to wipe the tears
from my face. I rushed past Kate and
went to sit down again. Tay came over,
and by the look on his face, I knew he
knew. He tilted his head and stared at
me. I looked away, hoping he couldn’t
see I’d been crying.
“You know?” I asked, still looking at
“Yeah, I know.” I hadn’t realized it
yet but his face was red and flushed.
Oh, god. Was he gonna cry, too?
I was surprised to hear Ike’s voice behind
“Look, man, let’s just make it through
the concert, and we’ll go out tonight.
We’ll figure everything out. Don’t worry so
much. Tay, can I get a minute with you?”
I hadn’t even known he was there. Tay stood
up and followed Ike a couple rows back.
Ike said something I couldn’t quite make out,
but when Taylor’s face got as white as a
ghost, I knew he had told him that I’d wanted
to break it off with Kate before all this
happened. Tay looked over at me and
just gawked. He turned back to Ike
and they talked a small while more.
I sighed, slipping on my headphones
yet again. I was in deep shit this time,
and there was no getting out of it.
As I listened to the loud music against
my ears, I realized something. Since
Kate was pregnant, that meant we
had to get – MARRIED?!
