Chapter 39

***

I stared as I watched Kate step into the cell and sit down next to Taylor.
"Kate...what are you doing here?" Ike whispered. I couldn't keep from gawking at her. It had been so long since I'd seen her; how was it possible that she was back now? Better yet, how had she known we were here?
"Listen," Kate said, as quietly as she could. "I'm here to help you guys. I know about what's going on."
"How?" Taylor wanted to know. Kate gave him a rude look.
"You have to be quiet!" she hissed. "Look...Chaz told me everything...the whole story. I had to promise him I'd never tell a soul, but...he has your kid, Ike. I can't let him get away with that. I can't let him do that to her." I looked at her, puzzled.
"Do what to her?" I asked. Kate shook her head, tears slowly crawling down her face.
"I don't know exactly what...but he has been talking about it." Kate announced. I sighed, wondering if things were ever going to get better, or if my life was stuck this way forever. It was so strange to see Kate. Truth was, I had kind of missed her, and wondered where she was at times.
"She remembers you," Kate blurted out, breaking my train of thought. I tilted my head.
"What?"
"I said, she remembers you," Kate repeated. "She calls you Uncle Sack." She proceeded to hold back her laughter at the ridiculous impersonation of my name. It wasn't that funny.
"Well, how are we gonna get her back? What do we need to do?" Taylor begged. Kate looked at the floor, now with a serious face.
"Well, for one thing, you're going to need to get out of here." she told us. Talk about stating the obvious. Just then, Natalie rounded the corner and stood for a moment, staring at the four of us in that cell.
"Kate?" she stuttered, slowly making her way to the bench where we sat. Taylor stood up, moving closer to Nat. They hugged briefly before she sat down.
"Kate's got information on Caitlyn." I explained.
"How?" Natalie wanted to know. Kate sighed.
"I've been with Chaz the past couple of days," she admitted. "I know exactly where Caitlyn's at, at all times."
"Well, we've gotta get you guys out of here!" Natalie exclaimed. "How much is your bail?"
"Nine-hundred." Ike announced.
"Shit!" Natalie shouted, her voice echoing. Her cheeks turned red when she realized how loud she'd said that.
"I don't have that kind of money," Nat told us. "I only have...well, a little over half that."
"You can get me out with that!" Taylor jumped up.
"No way! Either we all get out, or none of us do!" I snapped, giving him a rude look.
"I can pay the rest," Kate offered. Maybe she wasn't so bad; she seemed like a completely different person now than she had when we had broken up.
