When the last minute finally clicked, I glanced at the clock. 1:00
sharp. Sighing, I lay my head back on the couch where I sat with Taylor. Everything was silent. I couldn't take it anymore.
"I think I'm gonna propose to Kate." I blurted out. Taylor looked at me, smiling.
"You sure?" he asked. I nodded, picturing her face.
"Yeah...I'm sure." I told him.
He smiled wider, patting me on the back.
"Good luck, man. It's not easy, I'll tell you that...but it's most definitely
worh it." he said as Natalie made her way to the couch.
"What are we talking about here?" she asked.
"Zac's gonna propose to Kate." Taylor whispered. Natalie gave me a strange look.
"Why?" she wanted to know.
"Because...I...I love her." I explained.
"Last I checked, you hated her." Natalie
reminded me. I smiled.
"Well, that was then...this is now." I said as I got up. I headed for Ike's room where he was putting
on his shoes.
"Hey, you guys might wanna get ready...we have to meet Kate in a half an hour." he said
without looking up.
"Ike...I think I'm gonna propose to Kate." I announced once more. He looked up, surprised.
he asked, a hint of suspiscion in his voice.
"Yes, really...I just...can't get her off my mind. I love her...there's no one else I'd
rather be with." I told him. He smiled.
"I'm happy for you, man. But really, you guys should start getting ready to leave."
he stated and walked out of the room, headed for the bathroom. I sighed, flopping back on his bed.
"Zac!!" Ezra shouted
from the doorway. I sat up.
"Get up, sleepy head!" he yelled at me, and left, shutting the door behind
him. I laughed, throwing my legs over the side of the bed. I stood up and went back to the living room.
"You guys ready to go?" I asked.
"Let's go." Taylor declared. Ike came out of the bathroom, looking as though he were
about to go to the Oscars.
"What's with the clothes?" Natalie laughed.
"What?" Ike defended himself. "I just wanted to look nice for my daughter."
you're not going to have the chance if we don't leave." Taylor reminded us. And so, we headed out the door. As I let the door
click shut behind me, I said a silent prayer that for once, today would go right. When we reached the subway, Taylor ran his
metrocard through the slot, handing it back to Natalie. She slowly slid it through and gave it to Ike, who then gave it to
me. I slipped it across and followed them to wait for the subway. When it finally arrived, we stepped on, glad to realize
that it was nearly empty. We sat down on the side seats, sighing. It was already 1:15. I squirmed in my seat, nervous to see
Kate. I wondered how I would go about proposing to her. For the first time, I realized that Kate was most likely still hurt.
It hadn't been long since I'd thrown her out of my life. I felt guilty as I remembered our conversation that night in the
"You ruined that chance, Kate! You ruined
it with your stupid fake pregnancy and
trickery marriage! I don’t want to be
you! Please, just accept that!”
“I really do love you, Zac…but if this is what you want,
than this is what you want. I promise, this
time, I’ll really leave.”
The voices ran through my mind until I wanted to scream. I
suddenly felt incredibly stupid for ever thinking Kate would
take me back. What had brought me to even imagine that she
could still love me? I sighed, dropping my head in my hands. I
could feel the cold sweat on my forehead. Closing my eyes
tight, I took a deep breath. I knew I still had to try...no matter
what, I still had to try with Kate. I knew I could never be apart
from her. Why had I been so stupid to let her go? Why couldn't
I have seen how much she meant to me? My thoughts were
interrupted as the subway squealed to a stop.
